The Benefits of Botox®

There are dozens of cosmetic injectables on the market, but none is as well known as Botox®. In fact, since the FDA approved it for cosmetic use in 2002, millions of people have had Botox injections to improve the look of wrinkles and lines on the forehead, around the eyes, and between the brows.

Why is Botox so popular? Because of all of the benefits it offers. At Columbia Internal Medicine in Castleton, New York, Dr. Padma Sripada offers Botox to help women and men get great results, customizing every treatment based on each patient’s unique goals. If you’re considering Botox, here are some of the benefits you should know about.

Botox really does smooth out wrinkles

Botox is a neuromuscular agent, which means it acts on the nerves that control muscles. Normally when you make a facial expression, the nerves carry signals to specific muscles used to make the expression — for instance, the muscles around our eyes or brows. When the nerve signals reach the muscle, the muscle contracts, tugging on the skin and causing wrinkles and folds.

After thousands of facial expressions, those folds become etched into your skin. Because these wrinkles are caused by facial movements, they’re called dynamic wrinkles.

Botox is designed to work on dynamic wrinkles by blocking the related nerve signals. Because the muscles don’t receive those signals, they don’t contract, and they don’t create folds in your skin. All you see is smoother skin.

Botox injections aren’t painful

Botox treatment is simple and quick, typically taking about a half hour, depending on the areas you’re having treated. Prior to your injections, you can have a topical numbing cream applied to your skin so you barely feel the injections.

Because Botox injections use a super-thin needle — much thinner than needles used for vaccinations — most people report very little or no discomfort at all, even without a numbing cream.

Botox doesn’t require downtime

Unlike a lot of minimally invasive and surgical treatments, Botox recovery is quick — in fact, there’s really no downtime. Yes, you might have a little redness of minor swelling near the injection sites, just like you can have with any type of injection. But these effects are temporary, resolving soon after your treatment.

You can get back to your regular routine right after receiving Botox, making it an ideal wrinkle treatment for even the busiest people.

Botox can be combined with other treatments

Of course, not all wrinkles are caused by facial movements. Static wrinkles are caused by sun exposure, age-related changes, and even chronic stress. Addressing these wrinkles requires other kinds of treatment, such as microneedling or radiofrequency treatments.

The good news: Botox can be used effectively and safely alongside other skin tightening treatments for all-over improvements that can help you look younger and less tired out.

Botox has a long history of safe, effective use

Botox has been around for decades. Its first widespread medical use was in the 1970s, when it was used to treat strabismus (crossed eyes). Since that time, Botox has been used for other non-cosmetic treatments, including blinking disorders, severe neck spasms, migraines, excessive sweating, and even some types of urinary incontinence.

Botox results appear quickly

You start to see the results of your injections in just a few days, and those results last for about four months. Touch-up treatments let you maintain those results indefinitely. As a bonus, if you have repeated injections, the results may last longer — meaning you could wait longer than four months between injections.

Say “goodbye” to wrinkles

Botox is a great option for plenty of people who want to get rid of dynamic wrinkles. Before any treatment, Dr. Padma will review your medical history, evaluate your skin, and discuss your goals to make sure Botox injections are right for you.
